Brand Management Sara Lee: The Unno Launch Essay
1. What were Grupo Sansââ¬â¢ brands and what brand identity did they have? Grupo Sans, a leader in Spanish underwear market in 1970s and 1980s, was founded in 1960 in Matarà ³. Becoming a part of Sara Lee Corporation, the multinational company with the biggest at that time textile division in the world, in 1991, contributed to the growth and development of the company, and has led to the fact that 9 years later(in 2000) Grupo Sansââ¬â¢ income accounted for more than one-fourth of Sara Leeââ¬â¢ income in Spain. Comfortable, sophisticated, attractive price, best materials. Love at first sight! As we can see, all 3 underwear brands of Grupo Sans shared the same values: to provide their customers with the highest quality product at an affordable price. A distinctive feature of the underwear of the group was conventionality of products, which was important for the main target audience: adults and the elderly. This led to the fact that although with existing brands Grupo 1 Sans managed to become the market leader in Spain with market shares of 35% in slips and boxer shorts, 45% in menââ¬â¢s T-shirts, 23% in womenââ¬â¢s T-shirts, 15% in panties, and 37% in babyââ¬â¢s romper suits, there was a gap in target audience between 15 and 35, who perceived the underwear as too traditional and nonfashionable, and thus didnââ¬â¢t want to buy it. That, and several other factors, have led the management of the company to the decision to create a new, non-traditional and modern brand of underwear ââ¬â Unno. 2. When and why was the Unno brand launched? The year 1994: Here comes digital era with cell phone and Internet businesses. A new generation of brands had appeared in Spain, all attacking the youth segment and bombarding it with new concepts, new technologies, and new brands. Suddenly the understanding comes that youth is the segment that consumes most and, with the advent of social networks and other modern means of Source: Google Images communication, represents opinion leaders. Meanwhile, Grupo Sans faced difficulties in achieving further growth due to static situation on domestic market, at which 90% of sales were made. Spain had the lowest birth rate in Europe and there was zero population growth. Moreover, underwear quality was constantly improving and it took longer for garments to wear out. That is why Group Sans had to target teens in underwear industry in order to increase profit and achieve further growth. It could be made by means of line extension of the groupââ¬â¢s traditional brand (such as Abanderado, for example) or by creating a new brand, which would specially address young people aged 15 to 35. The problem with first choice was described by Josep Maria Sans: ââ¬Å"Boys growing up wanted their own brand once they became teenagers. Abanderado couldnââ¬â¢t satisfy that need because the kids had worn the same brand as children and it was also what their parents wore. The same was true of the Princesa brand in the case of girlsâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ That is why in 1999 the company decided to adopt a new concept, and establish a new brand Unno which became successful due to several reasons: 1) Employing the seamless garments now possible with the new technology 2) Simple and understandable for teenagers brand name ââ¬Å"Unnoâ⬠, which communicated that the product was the first, the best and unique. 3) you?â⬠3. Was it really preferable to laungh the Unno brand than to ext end one of the existing brands (Abanderado and/or Princesa)? The marketing campaign, with slogan ââ¬Å"Are you wearing it, or arenââ¬â¢t At the moment of the launch of the new line of underwear that used the new technology, Grupo Sans was facing a dilemma: should the new line be launched as an extension of one of the groupââ¬â¢s existing brands (Abanderado, Princesa and Ocean) or should it be launched under an entirely new brand that the company would create from scratch? 3 Given the fact that Grupo Sansââ¬â¢ brands have a big share of the underwear market and both are well-known brands by the consumer, the initial thought would be to extend either of these brands to launch the new solution. However, as strong as these brands were at the moment of the launch, they were targeting very specific segments: while Abanderado targeted adult men and boys, Princesa targeted adult women and girls. This meant that, even if these brands were very successful in these segments, it could be hard to extend them onto other target segments such as the one Grupo Sans identified: young adults between 15 and 35 years old. This new segment didnââ¬â¢t want to wear any of the other brands because they saw them as ââ¬Å"something their parents wearâ⬠, something uncool and boring. As the following positioning map shows, none of the existing brands could easily be extended to cover the targeted segment. Moreover, if one of the brands was to be repositioned in order to fit the new segmentation, its sales from existing customers could drop significantly. In addition to this, Grupo Sans wanted the new line to be perceived as something innovative and cool and decided to give the new line the highest priority in the company. Therefore, it made more sense for them to launch the new product and new technology under an entirely new brand: Unno. That way, they could focus on building the brand from scratch and making sure it was perceived the way they wanted. 4. How would you assess Unno as a brand name? Makes think of leader Brand ââ¬Å"the first to do somethingâ⬠Unifies brands for women and men Short, ââ¬Å"coolâ⬠name ââ¬â just what teenagers want May lead to confusins ââ¬Å"Unnoâ⬠or ââ¬Å"You noâ⬠in English, for example Unno ââ¬â one piece Sounds Italian ââ¬â this is good for fashion industry The goal of launching the Unno brand was to create a new product line that was perceived as something modern and innovative. We believe that the name Unno fits perfectly with this goal because of several reasons. First of all the word ââ¬Å"Unnoâ⬠is an alteration of the word Uno, which means one in Spanish. This is perfectly in line with Grupo Sansââ¬â¢ strategy for the new brand: to be the leader in the new technology and in the new segment they target. Moreover, it can be associated with being the first to get into this market, being the first mover. In addition to this, the brand ââ¬Å"Unnoâ⬠also signifies the unification of Grupo Sansââ¬â¢ male and female brands. As a name, Unno sounds cool and is short enough for people to remember easily. Young adults, Unnoââ¬â¢s main target, will feel identified with the brand and the name will help them perceive the brandââ¬â¢s image. Moreover, the name sounds very Italian, which can be beneficial thanks to the positive perception of Italian fashion. Finally, the name ââ¬Å"Unnoâ⬠perfectly portrays the new technology Unno represents. A one-piece garment that feels like you are not wearing anything. It becomes one with your body. 5. What were Unnoââ¬â¢s main communication objectives in 1999 and 2000? Why? Even though there were specific communication objectives in 1999 and 2000, the main objective of Unnoââ¬â¢s advertising was to sell the concept of a one-piece garment that moulded to the bodyââ¬â¢s shape, didnââ¬â¢t leave marks, and stretched to fit. The brand was communicating the idea that comfort was the main product benefit, and that it was like not wearing anything at all. Unnoââ¬â¢s communication was also aimed at achieving brand awareness for being the first and only brand selling this kind of product at that moment. But, advertising and commercials were not exactly the same in 1999 and 2000. In 1999, the year of the new product and brand launch, the main communication objectives were to inform about the benefits of the new technology used in the new product. The company focused on letting people know what were the benefits and the garment qualities of the Unno innovative underwear. These garment qualities were mainly that it was seamless and hugged well the body, so it was pretty well related to the idea of 6 ââ¬Å"selling comfortâ⬠to people. In order to communicate all these features and create brand awareness, most commercials had a very long audio which exposed the main benefits of the new technology. Moreover, advertising was made using provocative images as to attract peopleââ¬â¢s attention and make them know the brand and the product. The year after, in 2000, something changed. The fact that they had ran out of stock, made the company feel that not as much communication efforts were needed, so they decided not to allocate as many resources as they did while the brandââ¬â¢s launch and to shorten the length of the audio in commercials. So, in general terms, communication changed in the sense that less was spent on it and adverts got short, but the slogan was kept the same as the company wanted to keep on communicating what were the productâ⠬â¢s benefits and to generate brand awareness. The reason why the company was communicating such things was mainly to educate customers about the new technology and its benefits, in order to make them first try the product and then wanting to change from the traditional underwear to the seamless and hugging one. They decided to communicate it in an innovative differentiated way, with the half-naked models in ads, to attract peopleââ¬â¢s minds in order to recognize the product and create brand awareness. This kind of advertising was done due to the fact that they were targeting the young people segment and had to find a non-traditional way to advert non-traditional underwear. On the pictures below we can see the kind of provocative advertising that the company was doing, as well as the slogans: ââ¬Å"Are you wearing it or not?â⬠ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢ll feel as if youââ¬â¢re wearing nothingââ¬

Graffiti Art Essay
In the late 1960sââ¬â¢s, another art genre was recognized and developed although its lack of form and other basic aesthetic elements has been once a topic of debates as regard its acceptance in the artistic world. Obviously, it differs from the works of art found in museums and galleries and its kind are not found in those elite locations because its location is specific. The location of graffiti art has been actually a subject of oppositions as well as its bold, unexpected and unconventional presentation. Although still, its location, may it be illegal, does not disqualify it as art. Thus, graffiti art is a form of art despite criticisms on its legality, coherence and presentation. It is also argued that graffiti art is a form of vandalism, but this is true only if they appeared on private or public property without permission. Graffiti art is indeed another genre of visual masterpiece. Graffiti comes from ââ¬Å"grafficarâ⬠, an Italian word for drawings, markings, patterns, scribbles, or messages that are painted, written, or carved on a wall or surface. Graffiti is the plural of grafficar. Grafficar also signifies a process meaning ââ¬Å"to scratchâ⬠. Examples of which are different wall writings ranging from ââ¬Å"cave paintingsâ⬠, bathroom scribbles, or any message that is scratched on walls. In the ancient Egypt and Rome, in particular, graffiti has been visible in monuments and building walls which are now being explored. It is originally used to term inscriptions, figure drawings, and other carvings found on the walls of ancient sepulchers or ruins. Examples are the Catacombs, or those found at Pompeii. (Whitford, 1992. pp. 137) In the modern era, present day graffiti is also associated to any unsolicited markings on a private or public property, usually considered to be vandalism. In the early 1970s young New Yorkers has started to adopt tags, signatures and signs using aerosol sprays and markers in public places. The youngsters, belonging to the black and Puerto Rican communities have initiated the tagging which eventually developed and soon covered the cityââ¬â¢s walls, buses and obviously in subway trains. Tags even cover the entire train. Some may contain screen names or reflections of the writer, comes in subtle and often cryptic messages. Taki, an artist of Greek-American descent, was the first modern identified tagger in New York. He signed himself Taki 183, the number probably derived from the number in his apartment block. Some names also made their appearances in some real urban murals painted with spray-paint. Tags such as Futura 2000, Dust and Pink gained fame and recognition in the world of hip-hops. There were also Basquiat and Haring who also started to work in the street and the subway but their works swiftly spread beyond the works of graffiti. Their works attracted the attention of influential dealers which put them in great demand although their works were considered one of the rare forms of graffiti art. (Graffitiâ⬠¦ 2007, p. 1) Tagging and graffiti differs from each other although arguments about this difference still arise. Tagging is associated negatively as gang-motivated and illegal because it is usually meant as vandalism. It is also viewed as too vulgar or controversial to have public value. On the other hand, graffiti can be viewed as creative expression, not to mention its usual link to politics. Main Types of Graffiti Art The main types of graffiti fall into different categories and have their own names which are recognized in cities all over the world. First is ââ¬Å"Hip Hop Graffitiâ⬠. This is characterized by ââ¬Ëpiecesââ¬â¢ which hip hop graffitists create by aerosol spray paints. They are large and colorful works, usually including either a complex mix of letters or a cartoon-style picture. This type of graffiti often lacks much thought and planning in design and usually takes an extended period of time. Second is the ââ¬Å"Opportunistic Graffitiâ⬠which location is selected impulsively, on the basis of low risk and low natural surveillance. Graffitists of this type usually use ââ¬Å"tagsâ⬠or ââ¬Å"scrawlingâ⬠to mark their territory. Third type is the ââ¬Å"Gang Graffitiâ⬠. Gang graffiti is not art work but a sophisticated communication to publicize gang power, status, and territory. This type is somehow related to opportunistic graffitists because they also use ââ¬Å"tagsâ⬠or ââ¬Å"scrawlingâ⬠to mark territory. But in addition to this, gangs use graffiti to create notoriety or show off their defiance of the law and society, and as a mode of marking their presence. The fourth, the ââ¬Å"Political & Social Graffitiâ⬠is obviously of racial or political motivation. This is uncommonly regarded as part of the graffiti subculture, although it is recognized as damaging to property. The last type is the ââ¬Å"Commercial Graffitiâ⬠which is an emerging civic problem. This involves huge compensations paid by private organizations to graffitists to spray advertising logos onto walkways and buildings for promotions of their products. This type is an illegal form of advertising that avoids normal planning laws. (Stowers 1997, pp. 1-2) Gang Graffiti: The Most Dangerous Graffiti The gang graffiti is the most controversial not just because of the characters of its writings but because of its social impact in the neighborhood. Gang graffiti is an indication of gang presence in the community. Gangs use graffiti as their ââ¬Å"newspapers,â⬠thus they usually call it ââ¬Å"newspaper in the wallâ⬠as gangs use them to send messages. This is their way of marking boundaries and warning rival gangs. Graffiti may also be an instrument to advertise drug market or, as a memorial to a killed gang member. Symbols and cryptic writing style is exclusive in each gang. Death warrants and beat downs are known to be posted in graffiti. Upside down or crossed out graffiti generally means a put down or threat to a rival gang or person. (Bland and Read 2000) According to Michael Carlie (2002), graffiti is the most common method of gang communication and a major symbolism of their gang affiliation. Jonathan Kellerman (1994) as cited by Carlie referred to graffiti as ââ¬Å"the hieroglyphics of rageâ⬠because of the violence associated with it. On the surface, a person who is not familiar with it might think of graffiti as a simple nonsense painting on the wall or in poles or elsewhere, or just a plain vandal. Carlie adds that among other things, graffiti communicates the ââ¬Å"role callâ⬠or the roster of gang members, or the hierarchy of gang members. It also implies whoââ¬â¢s around, whoââ¬â¢s with who, whoââ¬â¢s disrespecting who, which gangs are claiming what territory and which areas are in dispute. It may be an announcement of current gang activities and whoââ¬â¢s getting ready to attack who, or whoââ¬â¢s already been killed. A familiar language, for example, is the ââ¬Å"Xâ⬠which if marked on a memberââ¬â¢s name means he is the likely target for an attack or murder. (Carlie 2002, pp. 2) An important not on gang graffiti is, in many ways, it is a code and codes in general are subjects to analysis. Deciphering gang graffiti requires the understanding of the symbols, abbreviations, structure, that composes the gang language. In the United States, gang graffiti is usually based on two dominant styles ââ¬â the L. A. and Chicago styles ââ¬â which vary greatly and influence to some degree across the country. Some gangs use an exclusive style while others use a combination. For example, the Gangster Disciples originated in south-side of Chicago might combine L. A. style gang lettering with Chicago Folks Nation symbols. In New York, Latin Kings might use Chicago Latin King symbols but with New York tagger style graffiti lettering. (Graffitiâ⬠¦ 2010) These styles and some of the variations are seen throughout the country and a person who understands both styles is more likely to understand most, if not all, gang graffiti. Characters of gang related graffiti has sharp, angular stick letters, or mostly contains religious, even ââ¬Å"satanicâ⬠imagery, or is done in one color of paint. Most of the times they are very simple and flat-out which make them easy to figure out. But no matter how simple they appear, it still requires some basic code-breaking skills. (Deciphering Gangâ⬠¦2010. p. 1) Figure 1: ââ¬Å"WS 18 St, HGSâ⬠ââ¬â West Side Eighteenth Street (gang), Hoover Gangsters (a clique of 18th Street) Two-digit numbers, especially ââ¬Å"13? , ââ¬Å"14? , or ââ¬Å"18? , signifies graffiti for a hispanic gang while three digits, especially if they are the area code of your neighborhood, itââ¬â¢s almost certainly not a hispanic gang, but a typical prison or street sort. Exception to this is numbers followed by ââ¬Å"Kâ⬠which means a threat from a rival gang. ââ¬Å"WS18? (figure 1) is a tag for the (hispanic) West Side 18th Street gang out of California. ââ¬Å"WS18Kâ⬠means a threat towards 18th Street by a local gang. Note that ââ¬Å"Kâ⬠is short for ââ¬Å"Killâ⬠. If there are two digits, see if theyââ¬â¢re prefixed by ââ¬Å"Nâ⬠, ââ¬Å"Sâ⬠, ââ¬Å"Eâ⬠, or ââ¬Å"Wâ⬠ââ¬â (or ââ¬Å"NSâ⬠, ââ¬Å"SSâ⬠, ââ¬Å"ESâ⬠, or ââ¬Å"WSâ⬠) ââ¬â which relate to the cardinal directions, and form part of the gangââ¬â¢s identity. Hispanic gangs more often use 13 and 14 ââ¬â the 13th letter of the alphabet is ââ¬Å"Mâ⬠, which generally stands for ââ¬Å"Mexicoâ⬠or ââ¬Å"La Emeâ⬠, the Mexican Mafia and the 14th letter ââ¬Å"Nâ⬠generally means ââ¬Å"Northâ⬠that symbolizes which end of California the gang originated from. It is a division as gangstas from the north and south parts of California frequently clash. Figure 2: ââ¬Å"Lil Capone WS VSLC, crossed out BK, Crossed out PBGKâ⬠ââ¬â Lil Capone (name of gang member) West Side Venice Shoreline Crips, Blood Killer, Playboy Gangster Killer (disrespect to rival gangs) Certain patterns appear without the numbers. As always, ââ¬Å"Kâ⬠is a threat to ââ¬Å"(K)illâ⬠, as are any crossed-out letters. ââ¬Å"Aâ⬠as in ââ¬Å"Almightyâ⬠ââ¬Å"Nâ⬠, that virtually stands for ââ¬Å"Nationâ⬠can be safely ignored. When seen together, which usually occurs, it show up that the gangs used to calling themselves the Almighty Whatever Nation. Figure 3: ââ¬Å"GD around Star of David with number six inside the star, pitchfork extending from the Dâ⬠ââ¬â Gangsters Disciples with six point star representing GDs and Folks. Pitchford represents GDââ¬â¢s and Folks Gangs which are known in the country carry a finite code which makes them easy to identify. ââ¬Å"GDâ⬠is the Gangster Disciples and ââ¬Å"VLâ⬠are the Vice Lords. ââ¬Å"LKâ⬠are the Latin Kings, and ââ¬Å"LQâ⬠the Latin Queens; sometimes when theyââ¬â¢re getting along, theyââ¬â¢re the LKQ ââ¬â Latin Kings and Queens. Crossed-out letters in gang graffiti usually mean a threat. Letters ââ¬Å"Bâ⬠, ââ¬Å"Câ⬠, ââ¬Å"Fâ⬠, ââ¬Å"Pâ⬠, or ââ¬Å"Sâ⬠crossed-out in a piece of gang graffiti, it signifies a threat towards a gang whose name, ââ¬Å"nationâ⬠, or nickname begins with that crossed out letter. In the Vice Lord tag, the letter ââ¬Å"Câ⬠is not crossed out which tells you the local Vice Lords donââ¬â¢t have complaints with the (C)rips. Gangs should write very carefully because all too often, little slights in graffiti like crossing out letters, or painting over rival gangsââ¬â¢ tags, are a sure warning sign of impending gang war. Figure 4: ââ¬Å"CVLNâ⬠ââ¬â Conservative Vice Lords Nation. Cane extending from the ââ¬Å"Lâ⬠is a CVL symbol. Upside down pitchfork shows disrespect towards Fold Nation gangs. Knowledge in deciphering gang graffiti introduced you to a neighborhood of gangs. In (figure 4) the ââ¬Å"Câ⬠is short for ââ¬Å"Conservativeâ⬠. The ââ¬Å"Conservative Vice Lordsâ⬠are one of several dozen larger Vice Lord ââ¬Å"setsâ⬠around United States. Some communities have taken a massive campaign against graffiti and also intensifies gang reduction. In Florida, the Florida Department of Corrections website posts information to help educate the public in reducing gang activities, which imposes threat to the community. Some gangs, the website says, even use graffiti as ââ¬ËDeath warrantsââ¬â¢ to authorities specifically to police officers. Community awareness program in most part of America uses the 4 Rââ¬â¢s of graffiti to intensify campaign against gangs and gang graffiti. The slogan says, ââ¬Å"READ IT, RECORD IT, REPORT IT & REMOVE ITâ⬠. (Deciphering Gangâ⬠¦2010, p. 1) Thus, citizens should read it and report it to police, and police will record it and then remove it. These steps are important but the removal of the graffiti is the most risky. Removal of graffiti manifests the neighborhoodââ¬â¢s refusal to be dominated or intimidated by gangs which is a language most gang members understand. Neighborhood residents who ignore graffiti and bother not to remove them are viewed as frightened and weak by the gangs who made them. At the worst, there are instances that gang members attack people who attempt to remove or cover their graffiti. Gang graffiti is the most dangerous of all graffiti and can usually be found around community rail stations. It marks territory and rival gangs usually challenge for territory by crossing out another gangââ¬â¢s graffiti. It imposes real and great danger to the residents. Messages in graffiti are taken seriously by gangsters and the longer graffiti is, the greater the risk that the threats will be acted on. Graffiti is a gateway crime and membership in gangs certainly guarantees a criminal record. Since juvenile of minor age receives more lenience when it comes to punishment, the minors are the usual target of recruitment and the doer of crimes. Residents Against Graffiti Everywhere (RAGE) is a community group that looks at social issues and works with local councils and Governments towards promoting a zero tolerance policy on graffiti. (Bland and Read 2000, p. 179) By legal definition, graffiti is vandalism. It is the unauthorized application of markings on someone elseââ¬â¢s property, especially without permission. Therefore, legality wise it is a crime. The manner that graffiti is regularly produced as illegal detracts it from the concept to be considered an art form. Very unfortunately that graffiti is responded with outrage over the abuse of someoneââ¬â¢s property. This negative connotation may take away the value or impact of the artistââ¬â¢s original message. Perhaps, it would be better to get permission from the owner of the ââ¬Å"canvasâ⬠to display the art. Yet, graffiti still elicits emotional response even in its illegal state. Furthermore, it is composed of lines, shapes, color, tones, and forms in a display that conveys a certain message and elicits an emotion. Therefore, it is safe to say that graffiti is indeed an art. As George Stowers (1997) presented four criteria as basis that some forms of graffiti become a work of art. First, the artistââ¬â¢s intention to produce a work of art separates graffiti art from everyday graffiti markings. Second, graffiti art established a history of development in style and technique. Third, the art world has already recognized graffiti as an art form. Fourth is the public response to graffiti art indicates that it is art. Regardless of the message it conveys, the fact that graffiti carry the aesthetic and creative symbolism and expression, public agrees that graffiti is a form of art. Like other art forms, graffiti art is a definite art when both the artist and the audience agree on the works ability to provide maximal aesthetic satisfaction. Graffiti is presently known as spray can art which is a form indeed recognized as art. It has form, color, and other base properties as any other art pieces. It also has as an arrangement of these elements into structures that qualify it aesthetically as being art. However, something that is done with spray paint might make it graffiti, but not necessarily qualify as art or graffiti art. Location and presentation still are the factors that hinder the general acceptance of graffiti art. However, the instances that the art worldââ¬â¢s acceptance of graffiti art shows that conventional methods of presentation are not all that matters in determining graffiti as an art. Graffiti in the form of spray can art is art like any other work that might be found in a gallery or a museum. References Bland, N. & Read, T. (2000). Policing Anti-social Behaviour. These laws have underscored the significance and viable contribution that an early-release of prisoners would generate into the well-being of the nation. However, factors such as the alarming prognosis set by the UK crime rate after the implementation of said rules have presented the idea that the early release of prisoners may not actually be a step towards the development of the society. In fact, the enactment of the mentioned laws may actually be construed as a movement towards the generation of an otherwise functional community. In this regard, this paper seeks to establish the detrimental consequences associated with an early release program of prisoners. This paper will provide a summation of the societal implication of advocating such reform in criminal justice by assessing the English social systemic make up and its concomitant response to such development. Over all, this paper will show how a perceived progressive stance is invariably paralleled to a regressive step leading to the collapse of an otherwise competent nation. Introduction In 1944, a year prior to the enactment of the United Nations of its charter espousing the abolition of racism, George Junius Stinney, a fourteen year-old black boy was executed in South Carolina (Taylor, 2011; Bydoon, 2010). In 1979, a mentally-ill man named John Paul Penry was condemned to suffer the death penalty (Orecklin, 2000). In 2006, four days after his 76th birthday and four months after a near-fatal heart

Poverty, Income Inequality, and Community Crime Rates Research Paper
Poverty, Income Inequality, and Community Crime Rates - Research Paper Example From the essay it is clear that increased rates of violent crime and burglary in the United States have raised questions about their association with the aggregate economic condition. Rising crime rates during the current time of economic uncertainty have exacerbated an already difficult situation for societies across the United States. In the early 1970s and late 1980s, a range of important literature reviews failed to arrive at a clear consensus regarding the association between income inequality in various states and violent crime. The majority of researchers chose to focus on the link between crime and selected social aspects, while others examined the impact of the rate of inflation. The U.S. Congress has also expressed concern over this issue and directed funding toward a number of federal programs that provide support to local and state law enforcement agencies. This shows clearly the impact of income on crime. This discussion highlights that the United Nations Global Pulse initiative cautions that world leaders must closely monitor indications of rising social tension and crime in their countries in the context of negative economic situations, and particularly vulnerable populations experiencing high levels of inequality. This assertion relies on the premise that offenders and victims of crime are vulnerable groups that have a likelihood of increasing in size during tough economic conditions, especially in areas with poor income distribution. In times of economic crisis, large numbers of citizens may undergo severe, or even sudden, income reductions.

Application of Financial Statement Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words
Application of Financial Statement - Essay Example The Income Statement The income statement is ââ¬Å"a financial statement listing all revenue and expenses for a fiscal period leading to net income or net loss: a statement that describes the operations of a business over a period of time (fiscal period)â⬠(Kravitz, 1999 p63). The income statement is therefore a financial statement that shows the results of the operations of a business. This involves financial information about the income that a business makes and the expenditure that the business incurs over a given period of time. In effect, the income statement matches the revenue of a business with its expenses and provides the net income or net loss. In other words, the income statement provides an insight into the kind of revenue inflows and outflows that were incurred during the normal trading activity of the business. Another aspect of the income statement is that it is a period statement. In other words, it captures the financial picture of a business's trading activit ies over a defined period of time. This means that the income statement is mainly concerned with how a business performed in trade over the specified period of time. Tracey (2009) identifies that the main purpose of the income statement is to identify the profit or loss made by a business in a given period of time (p13). This means that the income statement identifies the performance of a business in terms of how much profits or losses that the business made over the specified period for which the accounts were prepared. This shows clearly that the income statement is mainly a tool for the measurement of the financial viability or otherwise of a given business in a stated period of time. ââ¬Å"The income statement summarizes the sales revenue and expenses of a business for a period, usually 1 yearâ⬠(Tracey, 2009 p13). This indicates that most businesses prepare their income statements over a period of 12 months. The GAAP and other legal statutes require businesses to prepare financial statements once every 12 months. However, in some instances, a business might opt to prepare an income statement for periods that are less or more than the 12 month period. If a business began trading in the middle of they year, they many prepare income statements for a period that is less than 12 months. Such a financial statement might be pro-rated for taxation and other financial purposes. This means that the number of months for which the accounts were prepared will be identified and divided by the 12 months period to find out the true worth for certain statutory purposes like tax. Typically, the tax rate that is invoked on such a business is calculated by identifying the number of months for which the accounts were prepared and dividing it by 12 before the figures are multiplied by the annual tax rate. The main motive is that income statements must be prepared over a given period and there should be definite cut offs within which the income and expenditure captured ar e compared. Tracey (2009 p13) identifies four main steps in the preparation of income statements. In the first step, the sales revenue is matched with the cost of goods or services that were sold. In other words, this involves the matching of income or payments made by customers to the business against the cost the business incurred in producing the goods sold.
